The Table of Contents field to your left contains a scrolling list, similar to the type of list you might see in Apple's System 7 Finder‚Ñ¢ if you selected Name view for any of your folders. This list is used to navigate through the topics contained in this Electronic Document.
You can also check and uncheck topics by moving the pointer to the "check zone" (which lies between the widget and the actual topic) and clicking. This will allow you to set temporary bookmarks. These will get erased if you perform a global search, however. More on this in a moment.
You can check or uncheck all TOC entries by option-clicking in the check zone. The widgets use the same global toggle feature—you can open or close all folders by option-clicking in the widget zone.
TOPICS:
The Topic field you are now viewing displays data associated with the item currently selected in the TOC Field on your right. The "pathway" for this data is displayed in the Title Bar of this window. Topic fields also contain CyberText, which is data that is linked to a service (like an applet) or other information (like another topic or picture).
LINKED DATA:
Within the Topic field, you'll occasionally find an "iconette." Contrary to popular belief, these are not back-up singers for Ike Turner. These are buttons which can be clicked to present other data or services in the form of text, pictures, sound, a dialog, etc. Whenever you see one of these iconettes, click it for more data:

All of the linked data referred to in this Electronic Document can also be accessed by opening the Appendices folder in the TOC field and selecting the individual linked items.
FILE MENU:
Choose "Page Setup" to open the standard Mac dialog for setting page printing options.
To print the Table of Contents field, the Topic field or both, choose "Print TOC," "Print Text" or "Print Window," respectively. All of these commands open the standard Print dialog, from which you may print the chosen item.
Choose "Close Window" or type Command-W to close the current window. When you close the main window you are also closing the entire application
Choose "Quit" to quit the application.
EDIT MENU:
Copy is the only item ever enabled on this menu. It is enabled when text is selected in the Topic field. If you select text and choose "Copy" or type Command-C, the selected text is copied into the Mac clipboard, from whence it may be pasted into any receptive document.
GO MENU:
Choose "Find" from this Menu or type Command-F to open the Find dialog. Type the string you seek into its editable field. The current topic will be searched for the first instance of the given string. Choose "Find Again" or type Command-G to find the next instance in the current topic. Type Command-H to find a string already highlighted.
Select "Search" from the Go menu to conduct a global search for a string in all topics. Upon completion of the search, check marks are placed in the TOC field next to all topics containing the given string. If you have your sound on, you will hear "clicks" every time a topic contains the search string.
WINDOWS MENU:
The names of all currently open windows are listed under this menu. A check mark appears next to the frontmost window. Choosing an unmarked window from this menu brings that window forward.
DISMISSING WINDOWS:
You can close any windows or dialogs (other than the print dialogs) by typing the escape character or command-w. Command-period will also close any dialog other than the print dialogs. Please note that when you close the main window you are also closing the entire application.
If you have a number of Linked Data windows open, you can close them all by option-clicking the close box of any one of them.
DIALOG NOTE:
All dialogs in this application that have a "Done" instead of a "Cancel" button are "semi-permeable" modals. Such a dialog will dismiss itself if you click outside of its boundaries. We like to think of this phenomenon as an "extension" to the Apple Human Interface Guidelines.
FAST QUIT
Since this application is a reference tool, users often need to exit quickly. Toward that end, you can type the command-q character sequence and exit the application from any non-print dialog.
WHAT'S THE MATTER WITH THE PRINT DIALOGS?
They were written by Apple Computer, Inc. long ago in a far-off land before keyboard dismissal was so popular on the Mac. A fellow named Jobs thought it would be better to force the user to use the mouse to dismiss a dialog. Quess that Apple Human Interface thing can be carried too far, eh?
